Windows 8 Error Codes and Solutions


You may not optimize windows 8 if you consistently experience errors in your operating system. However, it is a new operating system so chances are there to get surprised with errors. Do not get obsessed, here are bunch of common errors and their solution:

Error code 0xc00000e9

Solution:
While upgrading from Win 7 to Win 8, you may encounter Error code 0xc00000e9
Try following steps to get this error fixed
  1. You may encounter, if you have removed a removable storage device while it is working.
  2. Click on start button and type “cmd”. Type C: it will be shown like this C:\>, if not type cd.. to get out of the directory until you reached C:\>. Now type chkdsk/r
  3. go to manufacturer’s website and update BIOS
  4. Revert back to settings prior the error

Error code 0x00005D

Solution:
If you are trying to install windows 8 and put bootable disc in it but get this error code 0x00005D and it prompts you to restart your pc. Even then problem persists. Following are the reasons:
  1. Windows 8 OS DVD
  2. System does not support windows 8
  3. System is not configured up to windows 8 minimum hardware requirements
  4. Windows 8 setup has some corrupt files
  5. Any hardware failure or internal error
You can install windows 8 after resolving these issues.

Error Code 0xc0000001
 Solution:
There is no need to freak out to see this error. You can fix it in a quick and easy way.
If you are experiencing Code: 0xc0000001 warning message, then follow the steps as given below to get rid of it.
  1. Shutdown your system
  2. Start your pc, as logo screen appeared press SHIFT and f8 key immediately and it will take you to Recovery and then select See advanced repair option
  3. Locate Choose an Options click Troubleshoot
  4. Click Advanced Options and click Windows Startup Settings
  5. Now click Restart. It will repair without any changes in in your files and folders.
If problem, persist then following tips would be helpful
  1. Replace or insert disc / USB in appropriate place
  2. Forcefully restart your computer by pressing (ALT+CTRL+DEL)
  3. Let your system automatically repair and you just hold on.

Error Code 0x800F0906

Solution:
While installing Microsoft dot net framework 3.5 on windows 8, you may encounter Error Code 0x800F0906. Usually we came across this issue because of network proxy, firewalls. To resolve issue you can try following steps.
  1. Go to desktop and open My Computer
  2. Insert installation media and right click on windows 8 client ISO
  3. Click Start on taskbar and type cmd
  4. Type Dism/online/enable-feature/featurename:NetFx3/All/Source:<drive>:\sources\sxs/LimitedAccess and press Enter
  5. Eject windows 8 media and install windows live component
  6. Go to Start button click All programs and click Windows Update
  7. Restart you pc and install Microsoft dot net framework 3.5.

Top 10 Windows 8 errors and solutions


1. Windows 8 installation error. Error message: “Windows 8 installation has failed”

Solutions:
1) Check your system requirement if it meets the minimum system requirement to install Windows 8
2) Try to disable all NON Microsoft installed software, uninstall your third party antivirus program, remove anything plugged in via the usb ports then restarted your computer.
3) Disconnect all the external devices (printers, scanner, USB, etc. except mouse and the keyboard; shut all non-essential services and apps off (iTunes, AVG etc) and then choosing the 'install only' option.
4) Created an installation USB and ran the upgrade setup from there instead of the HD
5) Try installing Windows 8 doing a CleanBoot (How to do a cleanboot?)
6) Check your ios file. You might have a corrupt download that is causing the issue.
Check the ISO Sha 1 hash to verify if you have the correct hash. If they don't match then your download is corrupt and you will need to download a new ISO and reinstall.

2. App /program can’t work

Solutions:
1) Try to un-install and re-install the app/program
2) Switched to local account and switched back to Microsoft account and then tried to run the app. (Go to desktop, press alt key + F4, select”switch users”.)
3) Check your third party program like firewall or antivirus program. Try to disable/remove your firewall/antivirus programs.

3. App can’t install from app store. Error message: "Your purchase can't be completed"

Solutions:

1) Check your third party program like firewall or antivirus program. Try to disable/remove your firewall/antivirus programs.
2) Check your network. Make sure that the network is fine. If you are using any Proxy connection, then try disabling the proxy connection.
3) Check if the date and time is correct, please correct it if it’s not correct
4) Update your app
5) Re-install Windows 8. The ios file might be corrupt and need to re-install Windows 8.

4. Can not to connect to network

Solutions:
1) Check your hardware
Check your cables, check or reset your modem, and check for problems with your network adapter.
2) Check your connection settings to see if they've been changed. (Control Panel >> Network and sharing center >> change adaptor settings)
3) Run Network troubleshooter to check issues(How to run troubleshooter?)
An automated troubleshooter can find and automatically fix some common networking problems.
4) Update network driver for your hardware and install driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode (How to install driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode?)
Check your network adapter driver if it is damaged, outdated or incompatible. Use Windows update to update your driver or download driver from the manufacturer’s website.

5. No sound on Windows 8

Solutions:
1) Check your sound card if that works properly. Open your device manager and check to make sure your PC has a sound card, or sound processor, and it's working properly.
2) Check your driver if it’s installed properly. Make sure you install driver in a compatible mode. (How to install driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode?)
3) Use a troubleshooter(How to run troubleshooter?)

Check your network adapter driver if it is damaged, outdated or incompatible. Use Windows update to update your driver or download and install a driver.

6. Windows 8 Black screen

Solutions:
1) Reboot the system by pressing power button. Sometimes, rebooting can fix this issue.
2) Go to safe mode to uninstall certain programs you've been installing lately, try to disable all NON Microsoft installed software, uninstall your third party antivirus program, remove anything plugged in via the usb ports then restarted your computer.
3) Disconnect all the external devices (except mouse and Keyboard) and check
4) Check your graphic Drivers and programs if they are compatible with windows 8. (Windows Compability Center). Try to install incompatible program and update the driver. Be sure that you install driver in compatible mode.
5) If you tried to upgrade from Windows Vista to Win 8, you may try to remove the drivers of the Graphics card, Audio Card, Network Card and security programs. Then, reboot the system to perform upgrading again for a test. If you tried to upgrade from Windows 7 to Win 8, please boot into Safe Mode with the option “enable low-resolution video” and see how it works.
6) Check your ios file. You might have a corrupt download that is causing the issue.

Solutions:
1) Check system if it meets system requirement to install Windows 8
2) Check if any new program/driver has been installed or upgraded. Disabling/un-installing the program/driver might fix this.

4) Try to update all the drivers and check if it helps. (How to update drivers?)

8. Can not play YouTube video

Solutions:
1) Upgrade to the most recent version of Adobe's Flash Player. Please note that before installing Adobe Flash, you will need to first uninstall any older versions you currently have running on your computer.
2) Temporarily disable popup blocking software installed on your computer to test.
3) Allow YouTube.com as a trusted site in your Firewall software.
4) Ensure other applications like Quicktime, iTunes, Real Player, or Windows Media Player aren't set as the default streaming application, as this might affect the video player.
5) Check your third party program like firewall or antivirus program. Try to disable/remove your firewall/antivirus programs.

9. Driver won't be installed/ recognized

Solutions:
1) Check if your driver is compatible with Windows 8 (Windows Compability Center). Try to update driver for your hardware and install driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode (How to install driver in Windows 7 compatibility mode?)
2) run hardware and devices troubleshooter and check if it helps

10. Cannot activate Windows 8

Solutions:
You may activate Windows 8 manually by Phone Activation
a. Click Start, and in the Search box type: slui.exe 4
b. Press enter on your Keyboard
c. Select your Country.
d. Select the Phone Activation option, and hold on for a real person.

Grub 2 recovery

We often come across a condition in which the boot loader gets corrupt. Here are a few steps that will help you recover your GRUB 2 boot loader.
Boot from a live CD or DVD, Which supports GRUB 2 (Ubuntu 9.10 CD or A DVD will take more time than a CD, so I suggest you boot from a CD).
Open the terminal and run fdisk -l to check the partition from which you want to recover GRUB 2.
Here I assume that you want to recover it from /dev/sda1.
Then run the following commands:
Now chroot into that partition by running the command given below:
Then re-install GRUB , as follows:
The output should be like what’s shown below:
If you get an error, then try the following command:
After a successful installation, exit from chroot and unmount the file systems that were mounted to recover GRUB. Now reboot.
You’ve successfully completed recovering your boot loader. Try this it will help you for sure. Be careful while doing this and keep the steps in your mind.

Convert FAT- NTFS

To convert a FAT partition to NTFS, perform the following steps.

  1. Click Start.
  2. click Programs, and then click Command Prompt.
  3.   In Windows XP, click Start.
  4.  click Run, type cmd and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type CONVERT [driveletter]: /FS:NTFS. Convert.exe will attempt to convert the partition to NTFS.

NOTE:
Although the chance of corruption or data loss during the conversion from FAT to NTFS is minimal, it is best to perform a full backup of the data on the drive that it is to be converted prior to executing the convert command

1) Goto no-ip & create yourself a free account.

2) Now your account been created & ll receive your account password via mail to your email address.

3) After getting your password login to your account of no-ip.com
4.After getting logged in, click upon add a HOST its on the left menu.

5) Type any hostname you want (eg:-abc) & select any domain from da given list (eg:-ftpserve.com) Click on Submit.

6) Now u have owned ur own static address (example: abc.serveftp.com)

7) Now click downloads button which is present above on the page & click on which operating system your using & den download DNS update client or u can download it from here directly, this is for microsoft window users..

8) After getting downloaded, u have to install this software & login here with your email address & p/w wen asked for it.

9) At last tick on the check box present at the static address.

10) U have your own static web address.


Process-2:
Installation & setting of the FTP-Server

1) You have to install Serv-U 4.1.03 , download this software from here

2) Run Serv-U & use the wizard to setup your FTP.

3) Click on next until u have been asked for IP-Address, leave it as it is & click upon next.

4) Enter ur domain name u have registered (example: abc.serveftp.com) it above in the domain field & click upon next.

5) U ll be asked for anonymous access, select No & click upon next.

6) Next u ll be asked for creating a named account, select yes & click upon next.

7) Choose any user name u wish (eg:-xyz) & click upon next.

8) Enter password for dis account (eg:-adc341) for security purpose choose difficult password.

9) U ll be asked for the home directory for the account which u have created above.Select directory & click upon next.

10) Click on yes for locking dis account to the home directory, doing dis the user cannot further move up into home directory, click upon next.

11) At last ur account has been created click finish.


Process-3:
Configuring the user accounts which u have been created.

1) On the left tree-menu, select the account which u have been created above & den click upon General Tab.

2) Goto Hide 'Hidden' Files.

3) Check Allow only and enter the number one in the box.

4) Set da maximum downloading speed up-to what extent u want.As this is an account so many ll be using so set it low(eg:-10-20) to save ur bandwidth.Don't leave it blank as users can download with full bandwidth.

5) choose how many users u want to login at on time.It depends on ur connection speed try these (56 - 1, ISDN - 3, ADSL or cable - 5-6 users.)

6) Click upon Dir Access Tab.

7) Now u can c home folder here.Highlight it & make your permission.

8) If u want only users to download check only these Read,List & Inherit.

9) If u want your users to upload into your server & but to only 1 particular folder but not to download, click upon that add button & then select that folder, Now u have to highlight that folder & set these permissions on that folder.Check,Write, Append ,List,Create & Inherit after setting these permissions click on the arrow which is present at the bottom right-hand corner.U want dis upload folder 2 be list first, before the home folder.

10) If their is any folder which u don't want anyone to access it, & it is present in the home folder, den click the add button & den select the folder.Now u have to highlight that folder & see that no all the check boxes are left.After doing this click upon upper arrow which is present at bottom right hand corner.

11) There are many things u can do, These are only the basics....

12) Your server is now ready to be connected..

Google Voice Actions versus Siri

In a previous article of mine I've shown you what Siri can do or in other words how can you talk to Siri, iPhone's 4S voice assistant. Of course Android devices and Google have their own voice assistant as well. It's called Google Voice Search.

With Google Voice Search you can
  • Send text messages Say "send text to [recipient] [message]"
  • Get directions Say "navigate to [address/city/business name]"

Google Voice Actions supports only English for the time being and I don't know if this is going to change with Ice Cream Sandwich. Unfortunatelly all my contacts are not in English so I can't try it myself. However the other commands worked ok.

7 ways to increase Torrent Speed


The use of Bit Torrent is an efficient way to transfer files of just about any size quickly and efficiently.   1. Get through the firewall:
Many times, you will find the administrator or the firewall in your web browser is set to block and receive torrent files. The first thing that you need to do is to get appropriate permissions for downloading torrent files, and add this to your firewall, which will enhance the speed at which you can download torrent files. If the internet is through a router, then you have to set the torrent file to cross the barrier of the security of the router also.
  1. Go to a different port:
The default port for BitTorrent protocol is always between the numbers 6881-6999. This is because BitTorrent sharing will involve high bandwidth usage. However, this is possible that you can configure a different port for your torrent client and this has been best advised to set this number to somewhere around 10000.
  1. Limit your upload rate:
A peer to peer network is sharing alike on the same or similar platform and therefore you should be able to set your client’s upload speed rate to a maximum amount, which will usually be about 80 percent of your maximum upload speed that is being offered by your ISP. Keep this speed, as high as possible, but you have to play your cards well as the upload speed affects your download speed as well.
  1. Use your common sense:
If you understand the concept of how Bit Torrent works, then your common sense will automatically tell you that this is possible to view the individual files being downloaded and disable the ones that you are not in need off, which will  help you to speed up the process of downloading the files using Bit Torrent.

If you use DOSKEY in either your AUTOEXEC.BAT file or as part of the properties of your
you can show and recall the history of commands you enter and the DOS prompt.
  • To recall previous commands, use the up arrow key.
  • A complete list of previous commands can be shown if you press the F7 key
  • To use one, press F9 and the number of the command you want to use
  • To clear the cache, press Alt+F7


Changing a File's Date and Time Stamp



You can change the Date and Time stamp of a file to the current setting.
Type:
COPY filename /B + ,, /Y


Removing the Microsoft Copyright from a DOS Prompt


By default, when you open a DOS window, the Microsoft Copyright notice shows.
To disable it, add the /K switch in the Program tab
For example: C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM /k


Setting the Number of Lines in a DOS Window


To set the number of lines displayed when you open up a DOS window:
  1. Create a shortcut for the MS-DOS Prompt
  2. Right click on it
  3. Select Properties
  4. Click on the Program tab
  5. In the Batch file:, line enter mode con: lines=xx (where xx is the number of lines you want displayed)

Starting DOS Fast

Want to start DOS fast outside of the START button? Drag it to your desktop.
Want to start it even FASTER without the mouse?
  1. Change the shortcut properties of the DOS icon to something unique, like Ctrl-Alt-Z.
  2. Then to start DOS from within Win95/98?/NT just enter C-A-Z and poof! it's there.
  3. If you toggle away, and hit the shortcut sequence again, you'll get the "old" DOS box, not a new one.


Long Filenames in a DOS Box



More long filenames in DOS paths...
You don't need the close double quote when entering long folder names in DOS.
CD "\program files
works as well as
CD "\program files"
You can use long file names in a MS DOS Box.
All you have to do is pu the long file name in quotes.
Example: cd "program files"

Expanding Full Path or File Name


NT 4.0 Only


Expand full path/file name with defined char using Command Prompt in Win NT 4.0
You can expand the full name of a file or directory using a character of your choice.
  1. Close all Command Prompts
  2. Start the Registry Editor
  3. Open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Command Processor
  4. If not present, add Key: CompletionChar
  5. If you like to use TAB-Key for expand: set value (REG_SZ): "9"
You can test it:
  1. Open up a DOS window
  2. Type: CD (followed by TAB)
  3. The first available directory will appear
  4. Press TAB again, the next one will appear
  5. The same can be done with the DIR command


Adding DOSKEY to your DOS Window



One way to have DOSKEY available when you open a DOS window would be to have it in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
This takes away conventional memory, even when you don't have a DOS window open.
To only use DOSKEY when you open a DOS window:
  • Right click on your DOS shortcut
  • Select Properties
  • Click on the Program tab
  • Add DOSKEY > NUL to the Batch File field
  • You can also add /INSERT if you prefer


Showing DOS Error Codes



If you want to see what error codes are being generated by DOS programs,
start your DOS session with the addition of a /Z parameter to the COMMAND.COM program.


Changing Directories in DOS



Normally, you can move up one directory level by typing CD ..
The DOS with Windows95 allows you to continue moving up beyond the first directory by simply adding more periods
For example, to move up two levels, type CD ...

Entering Long Paths in a DOS Window


If you have to enter a long path and program name in a DOS window,
  1. Open up the Explorer
  2. Go to the folder you want
  3. Drag it to the DOS window
  4. The path will be inserted into the window
This can come is useful with the long path names and all the ~'s you would normally need to type.
If you need to change directories, type in the CD before you drag the directory.


Having DOS Programs Prompt for Input



When you normally create a shortcut for a DOS program, it does not prompt you for any input and just runs the program
To change that, simply add a ? after the program name in the CMD field.
For example:
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\EDIT.COM ?
will start the DOS editor and prompt you for a file name to edit.


Verbose Directory Listing


To see your free memory and other useful info in detail:
  1. Open a DOS box
  2. Go to the directory that you want to get specific info about, or if you just want to see memory info go to any directory (I use the root).
  3. Type DIR /V
  4. The /v argument stands for "verbose".
  5. All sorts of good information comes up.

Easy way to open up DOS prompt in a specific directory



With the advent of long directory names, it can be difficult to open up a DOS box and CD to the directory you want
particularly if it is several layers of long names deep.
An easy way is to:
  1. Open up Explorer and highlight the directory you want to be in
  2. Select Run / Command from the Start Menu
  3. Your DOS prompt will now be in the directory you highlighted in Explorer

How does it work?
Dragonflies are the mortal enemy for mosquitoes and in flight they generate sound frequencies (approximately) between 67 Hz and 45 Hz, depending on their sizes.

56 Hz is a good average number in between those frequencies. Your PC sound card and speakers will work well for this purpose.
There are many sound and tone generator programs available on the internet for both the Mac and Windows PC. Setup your computer with the sound/tone generator program running and then play the sound through your computer speakers. The speakers can be aimed directionally for complete room coverage.

The sound level on the speakers should be adjusted so it is barely audible. This arrangement can be setup in a bedroom where you would like to have the window open but are worried about mosquitoes. One speaker should be fairly close to where you are sleeping.

How To Speed Up Torrent Download


1. Cap your upload (most important)
Limit your upload speed to approximately 80 percent of your maximum upload rate. You can check your upload speed over here (never trust your isp). Once you know your maximum upload speed, change the max upload (to 80%) speed in your torrent client’s preferences.
Don’t get me wrong, everyone should share as much as possible, but if your upload rate reached it’s max, your download rate suffers significantly.
2. Hack the max TCP connections
If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more on this).

3. Check seeds and peers
A simple tip, but o so important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.
4. Change the default port.
By default, BitTorrent uses a port 6881-6999. BitTorrent accounts for a lot of the total internet traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have the ports forwarded or UPnP enabled.
5. Disable Windows Firewall
It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.
